I currently work full-time as a Security Lieutenant for a contract with the US Department of Energy. I started a YouTube channel this year to document my path from zero skills to job ready and I want to share this experience with you

Future Goals

Balancing full-time work and studies, I’m aiming to build skills that open doors to remote work. The love of my life lives in another country. My dream that I am fighting to accomplish is being able to work remotely and move to live with her until we are ready to move back to the United States.

Who is Thomas?

First and foremost I am honest. Honest with others and as much as I can I try to be honest with myself. I am just a guy trying to fight to get into a career trajectory that will ensure that I can support my family in the near future. I make mistakes and I own them.

What is the goal?

To become job-ready in IT/Cybersecurity and move to live with the woman of my dreams (will be engaged this year!!! woo hoo!!!). I would like to be employed by a regular company, but I have come to understand that working internationally and taxes create a huge headache. So, I would like to start my own business I can be proud of, and offer courses to help those who want to join as well.

What certifications are pursued?

Currently working on CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, and Coursera IT Support Fundamentals.

How is learning balanced?

Honestly, balancing everything is challenging. I live alone, so I have all of the basic housework to do. Then working full-time, attending college, and pursuing certificates. It just takes effort and dedication to being organized and disciplined with your time. No more partying or gaming all night. Its a waste of time.

Any tech background?

No prior tech experience, just basic computer skills. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and other basic applications. I have also worked with alarm monitoring tools and CCTV systems with my current job.

Why document this journey?

I genuinely felt as though "I was too stupid" or "I am not cut out for IT". But, I really started to grind the knowledge out, and I want to help others. There is no such thing as being too stupid for IT. It is just a matter of these concepts being really hard to understand as a whole. I want to show that ANYONE can accomplish this. Take your time, be patient, and stay disciplined with studies and we can do this.
